Spending a few hours in Ghent is more than enough to fall in love with one of Belgium’s most charming canal cities. Located in the heart of Flanders, Ghent was once one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe during the Middle Ages. Today, it blends medieval architecture, lively student energy, and scenic waterways into a compact city that’s easy to explore on foot. Often overshadowed by Bruges, Ghent is considered one of Europe’s most pleasant surprises — and a must-visit if you’re already in Belgium. Getting to Ghent from Brussels During one of my many visits to Brussels, I decided to take a short train trip and explore Ghent. Having already visited Bruges, Ghent was the obvious next choice. Train duration: ~40 minutes Ticket price: Around €10 return Arrival station: Gent-Sint-Pieters Once you exit the station, you’ll immediately notice hundreds of bicycles parked everywhere,  a scene that strongly resembles Amsterdam. Walking to the city centre is possible (about 3 km), but there’s little to see along the way. Instead, take Tram No. 1, which reaches the historic centre in just 10 minutes. A one-hour ticket costs around €3 and saves energy for sightseeing. Exploring Ghent on Foot The best way to experience Ghent is by walking. The historic centre is compact, flat, and filled with architectural gems. I visited on a sunny Sunday, and although the weather was freezing, the city was lively and bustling. Walking along the Leie River, you’ll pass medieval guild houses, churches, and canals that feel straight out of a fairytale. Even with only a few hours in Ghent, you can see the city’s highlights at a relaxed pace. Top Things to Do in Ghent City Centre St. Nicholas’ Church This church is one of the first landmarks you’ll encounter in the centre. Its impressive tower dominates the skyline, and the entrance is free. Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts) A medieval castle located right in the heart of the city.
