Achilleas’s Early Steps into Swimming and Tennis
Q: Can you tell us about yourself and how you got into swimming and tennis?
A: I started swimming at three, a decision my parents made to help me learn the skill. As I grew up, my passion for swimming deepened, and I decided to compete with the hope of one day becoming a professional swimmer and winning an Olympic gold medal. This was the beginning of my young athlete travel journey.
Tennis was a sport I chose to learn on my own. After just a few lessons, I realised how much I loved it, and my parents began to arrange more lessons for me. Eventually, I decided to compete and pursue a professional tennis career, dreaming of one day playing at Wimbledon.
Overall, I consider myself an ordinary boy with big dreams. I enjoy reading and learning about history and nature. I also try to care for the environment and contribute to charities in various ways. For example, I regularly donate my toys and clothes and set aside some money to support animal welfare.
A Day in Achilleas’s Life
Q: What does a typical training day look like for you?
A: A typical day for me includes swimming in the morning before I start school. In the afternoon, I have tennis and fitness training. If it were up to me, I would train even more, but all my coaches are cautious about how many hours I spend training each day. They want to ensure I don’t get too tired or bored since I’m still a child. However, my training will gradually increase as I get older.
Overcoming Challenges in a Young Athlete’s Travel Journey
Q: What challenges do you face as an athlete traveling for competitions? How do you stay motivated?
A: I love traveling, but it can be tiring. That’s why I often sleep or read on the plane, so I can rest and avoid device distractions. Despite this, traveling—especially for competitions—is always exciting, and I genuinely enjoy it. Every time I travel, I learn something new, especially since managing stress can be challenging. It’s all part of my young athlete travel journey.
I stay motivated because I have personal goals I want to achieve, and I look up to successful athletes. I am very disciplined and consistent; I never miss my training sessions. Even when I might not feel like it, I remind myself this is the exact time I need to push through. I keep striving for improvement and aim to be better every day.

What Travel Teaches a Young Athlete
Q: How has traveling to different countries enriched your experience as an athlete?
A: Traveling has taught me a great deal about life. With each trip, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with diverse people, learning how to be independent, communicate effectively, and ask for help when needed. I’ve even had the chance to protect my mom during our travels. Additionally, I practice various languages and learn about cultural differences, which is essential for my personal growth.
As a member of different teams of kids and trainers, I’ve had to adapt to other perspectives and follow various instructions. Transitioning from one setting to another can be challenging, but I embrace it as a valuable learning experience. All these skills are essential for me as an athlete and a person, shaping my unique young athlete travel journey with every competition I attend abroad.
Cultural Discoveries on the Road to Competition
Q: Can you share an exciting cultural experience you had while traveling for a competition?
A: In some countries, people go to bed quite early. As a result, when I am abroad, it’s easy to maintain my sleep schedule since everyone else also goes to bed early. I’m not missing out when I turn in early.
The Support System Behind Achilleas’s Success
Q: Who supports you in your sports and travel endeavors?
A: I feel fortunate to have supportive people around me, including my family and trainers, my biggest fans. I need a lot of support, not only financially but also mentally. Maintaining mental strength is challenging, especially when dealing with losses and inappropriate behaviors from parents and kids, particularly in tennis. This is a significant challenge for me. I also experience some jealousy along the way, but I’m learning how to handle it. Finding friends in the same sport is difficult since we are all primarily competitors.
Travel Must-Haves for a Young Athlete
Q: When traveling for competitions, what are some things you always carry with you?
A: I like to carry my favorite teddy bear with me. Regardless of the results of my performance, I find peace while going to bed afterward. Another essential item for me is my cross.
Tasting the World: Achilleas’s Culinary Adventures
Q: What’s the most interesting or unusual food you’ve tried during your travels?
A: I have tried many dishes, and there are significant differences between various countries. I mainly focus on trying the national foods that each country is known for. For example, in Slovakia, I tried bryndzové halušky. It had a very unusual taste, but I gave it a try. Would I choose this dish again if I had other options? Probably not. What’s important is to try new things, just like in sports!
Exploring Beyond the Court and Pool
Q: What do you like to do in a new place when you are not competing?
A: When I’m not competing, I enjoy exploring new places. I like visiting the zoo and seeing historical sites and monuments, especially those from the Second World War, my favorite part of history.
Words of Wisdom for Future Champions
Q: What advice would you give to other young athletes who dream of competing internationally?
A: Discipline and consistency are the most critical factors for success. Always arrive on time for your training and give your best effort. There is no easy path; you must work hard to achieve your goals. You will realise that not many people will wish you well along your journey. Therefore, surround yourself with the few who can support you on your path. Stay committed and passionate like I do in my young athlete travel journey.
